Pre-mobilisation testing — conducted before a worker is deployed to a remote site for the first time or after a significant absence — is standard practice in the oil and gas industry. It serves a dual purpose: screening out workers who are currently using prohibited substances and reinforcing the expectation that the site is a drug and alcohol-free workplace.

Pre-mobilisation testing requirements should be clearly defined in the worker’s contract or engagement terms and should specify:

  • Which substances are tested and which method is used.
  • The maximum age of the test result (e.g., within 30 days of mobilisation).
